The Grieshaber MPC solenoid-operated vertical scissor was developed by Robert Machemer, MD, and Jean-Marie Parel, Ing. ETS-G, PhD. Prior to the development of small gauge vitrectomy, vertical scissors were commonly used for cutting fibrous bands, creation of relaxing retinotomies, and tissue delamination.
