Johanna Seddon, MD, ScM, FARVO, FASRS

Johanna M. Seddon, MD, ScM, FARVO, FASRS, is a retina clinician-scientist and epidemiologist who pioneered the fields of epidemiology and prevention in ophthalmology. Her illustrious career led to significant contributions in understanding the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and groundbreaking discoveries about the effects of smoking, diet and nutrition on onset and progression of this leading cause of blindness. She also established the relative roles of genetics and environment and discovered numerous novel genetic variants for AMD in several biologic pathways, including rare genetic variants with the strongest impact on AMD. Dr. Seddon helped trailblaze the way for women in ophthalmology and forged innovative avenues of research that changed the management of AMD and prevented loss of vision for people worldwide.
